HOMEFRONT COMPASS / SOURCE DESK 09

Know which map
you are looking at.

Wildfire, earthquake, flood and moisture questions do not belong in one mystery score. Start with the agency that owns the information, record what that source actually says, and keep the unanswered question visible.

THE FIRST DISTINCTION

Hazard is not the same thing
as your home's exact risk.

CAL FIRE's Fire Hazard Severity Zone program makes that distinction explicitly. The same discipline matters elsewhere: an official hazard map can be essential evidence without being a site inspection, retrofit prescription, insurance decision or guarantee.

Compass will not ask for your street, coordinates, policy details or health history. When an official tool needs a location, you open that agency's site directly and decide what to enter there.

BUILD YOUR RESEARCH FILE

Choose the concerns
you want to investigate.

Select one or more. The official source cards stay independent so a flood map never becomes a wildfire score and a moisture observation never becomes a medical conclusion.

SOURCE TRAIL

No topics selected yet.

Choose at least one concern. Compass will preserve the agency, source link, your observation and your unresolved question without creating a risk score.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN · This worksheet stays in the current browser page until you copy, download or print it. Compass does not receive the location you may choose to enter on an official agency site.

CAL FIRE / OSFM

Wildfire hazard + home hardening

The state FHSZ source explains mapped fire hazard and explicitly distinguishes hazard from individual property risk.

USE IT TO

Check the official map and current state guidance; then separately review home-hardening information for building features.

DO NOT READ IT AS

A mapped zone is not a Compass risk score, survival prediction, insurance result or site inspection.

U.S. Geological Survey

Earthquake hazard maps

USGS publishes earthquake hazard, fault, scenario and latest-earthquake mapping resources.

USE IT TO

Use USGS maps to understand regional hazard information and the map's own legend, date and scope.

DO NOT READ IT AS

Compass does not infer how a particular building will perform or whether retrofit work is required.

FEMA

Flood hazard maps

FEMA's Map Service Center is the official public source for National Flood Insurance Program flood-hazard information.

USE IT TO

Use the current official map/product for the location you choose to research and record the map or panel details yourself.

DO NOT READ IT AS

Compass does not determine insurance requirements, premiums, elevation, floodproofing design or a property's exact risk.

Open official source

U.S. EPA

Moisture + mold starting point

EPA explains that moisture control is central to preventing and controlling indoor mold growth.

USE IT TO

Use visible conditions and appropriate source guidance to decide what question needs qualified follow-up.

DO NOT READ IT AS

Compass does not identify mold species, diagnose health effects, certify remediation or inspect concealed assemblies.
